Description
Wavy caps take their name from the rippled cap margin that develops as the fruit matures, and the species behind them is Psilocybe cyanescens. This is a genuinely different organism from the cubensis strains that fill most shelves, and it hits considerably harder. Because it colonises wood chips rather than dung, it grows wild across temperate regions each autumn. Therefore, it has a devoted following among foragers.
How It Differs From Cubensis
Potency is the headline. This species commonly tests several times stronger by dry weight, so the same gram figure means something very different on the scale.
Appearance separates them too. The caps stay small and shift from caramel when moist to pale when dry, while the stems remain slender. Meanwhile, the flesh bruises an intense blue almost instantly.
Cultivation indoors is notoriously difficult. Outdoor wood-chip beds work far better, although they take a season to establish.
